Youngnuo MC-C3:Intervalometer = AWESOME! Me = Not so much...

You could spend $200 + on the official Canon Intervalometer, but if you're like me, you are a poor
starving artist and every dollar counts so my advice is put that $200 under your mattress. You can
buy a 50mm 1.4 for $300 and that lens has become a steadfast workhorse for me. I bought my
intervalometer for $34 on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/TC-80N3-timer-remote-for-canon-50D-40D-30D-20D-1D-etc_W0QQitemZ370215596773QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera_Camcorder_Remotes?hash=item563291b2e5#ht_2264wt_941
This seller has a great rating and for good reason. Delivery was prompt and the item
works like a charm. However,if he has sold out, the link to the item on the manufacturer's site is here.
I found it to be very simple to figure out and shot my first timelapse ten minutes after it arrived
(plus the half hour it took to shoot). That being said a few friendly words of advice I learned the hard
way.
1) Don't set the Canon 7D on Auto ( at least indoors). I made that mistake and the flash would fire on
some shots and not others creating a very undesirable flickering effect when I played the timelapse
back.
2) If your using a 50mm 1.4 and doing a timelapse of making eggplant parmesan. Don't put the garlic
container or spoons to close to the camera as this also causes a very undesirable focus shifting effect.
3) Once you are done shooting and have transferred all the stills onto your computer. Do not. I repeat
DO NOT select all 5,000 + stills and then click - Open with Quick Time.Although this will provide
some entertainment as 1000's of huge QT windows pop up on your screen, this will quickly turn to
aggravation as your computer slowly grinds to a halt and crashes. Luckily no damage was done but I
definitely got a bit of a scare doing this. Instead I would advise selecting the first Image in the
folder and then in QT selecting Open Image Sequence or something to that effect.
-So what I have learned is that despite the natural learning process of trial and error the Youngnuo
intervalometer works great. Hope this is of some help!

Nikon,Nikon, Wherefore art thou Nikon?

11.11.2009

Dear Nikon,
I have seen the bewildered looks of abadonment and anguish from your longtime customers. I've heard them say,"I'm just waiting for Nikon's answer to the 5D." Each word of that sentence painful to speak as it escapes their lips. They want to believe, blinded by their brand loyalty and heavy investments in glass. They sit waiting with baited breath. Waiting for their day in the sun when they can scoff at the droves of impatient fools who jumped ship too soon. The day when they too, will bask in the glory of beautiful 1080p HD footage. The world is headed there Nikon. Yet, you rest on your laurels.Complacent. Like an old man resigned to his fate. "Life dealt me a bad hand.", he says. "I suppose it's time I moved on." But alas Nikon,it is the 21st century, the age of Twitter not Hemingway. This is not some dusty novella, this story is about a battle for the lion share of the DSLR market. Yet,you stand there, and watch as customer after customer walks away, satisfied that you are a still camera manufacturer and will remain so. Your dedication to "purity" is beginning to look like a company caught with their proverbial pants down.
Sincerely,
A New Canon Owner

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning for 5D's,

The wretched refuse of your teeming store.

Send these, the videoless, tempted by the 7D,

I lift my Canon beside the golden door!"

My first attempt at Photgraphy. Happened to be using a 7D...

10.10.2009

Well not much to say. I tried taking photos for the first time and I used a 7D with the 24-70mm 2.8. You can be the judge. I obviously did some Photoshop on them but was very impressed with the easy intuitive features even for a non-photographer like myself.

GO SELL YOUR VIDEO CAMERA and 5D MKII the 7D HAS TAKEN OVER!!!!!!!!

10.05.2009

All Photos courtesy of Gary Nevitt Jr.

Run as fast as you can and sell all the video gear you own. Sell your XHA1,your EX1,whatever camera you use. Sell your 5D MK II. Sell your car and house if you need to. You absolutely only need a 7D. The 7D is perfect. It has no flaws. It actually shoots the video for you. You need no talent at all. Anyone can pick it up and whatever they film looks like Spielberg was there. Of course, I am joking but it seems the 7D is causing quite a stir. 5D MK II owners are in an uproar, people with traditional video cameras are outraged. Look people, yes I am guilty of being excited about the 7D it's the first DSLR I bought for myself that shoots HD video. Cristina owns the 5D MK II and a Canon XHA1 and we are a team. Are we going to dump the 5D now? NO. We aren't even THINKING about dumping the XHA1. Hell,we still have a Canon XL2 and we haven't dumped that. Each of these cameras is a tool. Would you go to war with a gun that only had one bullet and could only be fired after precisely aiming and tweaking it to the correct settings? If you answered yes, you wouldn't survive. The same thing applies to shooting a live event. If i tried to shoot someone's wedding with just the 7D I wouldn't survive as a business. I would miss shots while I was focusing, etc. Each tool serves it's purpose. I love the XHA1 I can shoot beautiful HD Video and it allows me the luxury of panning, tilting and reacting to the nature of a live event. Things happen quickly. Moments are fleeting. If I had only the 7D or 5D MK II, I would miss some of those moments. That being said, If I shoot with the XHA1 in a poorly lit situation, for example, every reception I've ever been too,I now have to use on-camera lighting which produces an image that, quite frankly, I hate. Faces are washed out and guests get annoyed at having a bright light in there face. Turn your camera light on and go into a poorly lit room. Now turn that camera on yourself and see how it feels. Now, with the 5D I can set up with a 70-200 mm lens in a pitch dark reception venue; stay far away from guests while unobtrusively capturing candid moments. The 7D is a more affordable version of the 5D MK II minus the full frame sensor, in my opinion, with more choices for frame rates and an all around better more intuitive design for shooting video. Also with the 1.6 crop factor lenses become more magnified therefore I can use a smaller lens and still get in closer. So as far as the war goes between conventional video cameras and DSLRS and then the war being waged between the 5D MK II and the 7D, I call a cease-fire. What everyone needs to understand is this. The equipment is great but look, quite frankly, if you can't shoot, you can't shoot.A good eye and a basic knowledge of shot composition is not something you can pre-order from Amazon.com or Best Buy. Learn how to use the tools you have available to you. Master them. Then, when you feel you need better equipment to add some flavor and different aspects to your work, thoroughly research the options. Then make the decision for yourself because no one else can.
