Canon 7D Field Test

10.04.2009

Ok so as promised I set off with @cristinavaldivi to put the 7D to the test in a "real world" (read paying job) situation. We were shooting a "Save the Date" with a very inspiring and awesome photographer, Gary Nevitt for Clair Pruett Studios. We wanted to see what this bad boy (the 7D not Gary) could do when we slapped a 14mm Sigma on it and threw it on the Glidecam 4000 Pro (Older version) Zacuto Tactical Shooter and the Glidetrack Compact. First impressions, after normally flying the XHA1 on it we were able to get crane-like shots due to the extreme light weight of the 7D. I read a rant where some guy says DSLR's like the 7D are only good for close up shots of faces with the background blown out and it's a one-trick pony. Maybe, it's because I'm still giddy like a school girl with my new 7D but I disagree and I think this short video we slapped together is pretty good evidence otherwise. No color grading was done, so this is straight out of the camera .We set it to Neutral with the intention of not crushing blacks so we could color grade it later. Now, for those of you who may say it's too much Glidecam and Glidetrack we also had a 5D MKII for shot variation but as people have already seen loads of 5D MKII footage and this is no where near our final product we only posted the 7D shots as the camera is new and we figured that's what people want to see. Anyway, don't be mean. This is just so people can look at it and make their own judgements to the cameras capabilities and shortcomings. Apparently, some people are experiencing overheating problems but all's well on the 7D front here.
Here it is:

Footage looks good, but content needs to have way less face-sucking. Show the couple doing other things... laughing together, looking at things, doing fun things together. After 1 minute, I got really tired of watching them kiss.

This is NOT the final product by any means. It was only meant to show footage from one camera the 7D. We have lots of footage from the 5D MKII that will be used in the final product. This was edited directly after we shot it natively in FCP w/ no color grading. But I agree about the kissing, But it will not all be kissing in the final product.

What do you think about the audio situation? I'm trying to get the powers that be here to spring for a 7D. If you connect a mic is the sound usable? Also, how does the footage key?

Best bet for audio is Zoom h4n and syncing with pluraleyes. not sure about keying footage as i haven't done that yet.
